Mental pillars
Hope you enjoy the read : )
Today I’d like to talk about a concept I was thinking about today which I'm pretty sure already exists, but I didn’t search so for all I care I created it.
Mental pillars.
Mental pillars is the name I gave to describe what makes us behave the way we do, what makes us NOT allow ourselves to do certain things, and what defines our values.
For example: If you’re in a relationship, and you’re someone really loyal, you have a strong mental pillar for loyalty. You WON’T allow yourself to cheat in any way, you’d feel horrible, it defines who you are.
Another great example in my case specifically would be to ALWAYS do what I have to do every single day, like exercising to name one. It’s harder to skip a day of exercise. It’s how I am, who I am. I can’t betray myself.
I hope it makes sense.
All of this got me thinking about the things that we do, but wouldn’t like to. Drinking is a classic.
Many people drink, they know it’s horrible for them, but they can’t really force themselves to stop even if they say “I’m never drinking again”, as it eventually comes that one day when the brain just ignores everything and does whatever it feels like.
Maybe… Just maybe… If they build a strong mental pillar regarding the area, they won’t be able to do it any more, it will feel like a block.
Ok great! So how do we build a mental pillar? I’ll be honest, I think most of them are built by accident. You don’t actively think about it, you just make it a habit that’s hard to break.
I do a lot of things daily without struggle because with time this mental pillar got so strong, I cannot not do those things. It started with only exercising everyday, then drawing, then studying a new language. I kept adding stuff when the time felt right, and it wasn’t hard.
Yeah yeah, I know it doesn’t really answer the question, but but but, maybe you can figure out what works for you. If I wanted to build a new pillar though, I’d start by trying to see myself as someone who can or someone who doesn’t do something.
And I think that’s enough for today : )
Bit of a long one but I enjoyed talking about it. Hope it helps someone.
See you tomorrow!
